All workers in Aotearoa New Zealand are entitled to receive a set of basic minimum working rights. These rights can not be taken away from you and you can not sign them away. These rights have been put in place to ensure that you are not exploited by your employer.
Your employer is obligated to provide you with your minimum working rights. These will generally be outlined in your employment contract and will include things such as; minimum pay, holidays, rest and meal breaks and sick leave to name just a few. It's important that you know what your minimum rights are to ensure your employer is providing you with all of them.

An employment contract (agreement) is a legally binding document that protects you and your employer. All employment contracts must contain information such as your name, hours of work, if you are being hired on a full-time/ part-time basis, your responsibilities in the role, how much you will be paid and how it will be calculated, leave and details about disputes resolution in the work place. Your contract will typically contain more information than this, but these are just some of the mandatory sections that your employer must include.
